Life Shirley Hardie Jackson was born December 14, 1916 in San Francisco, California, though later in life she would claim to be born three years later in 1919. She grew up with her parents, Leslie Hardie and Geraldine Jackson (née Bugby), in Burlingame, CA, beginning to write short stories as a young teen. In 1940, Jackson graduated from Syracuse University where she met her husband, literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman (Commire, 152). The couple had four children, whom Jackson cared for in the home while she diligently wrote every day. Her husband She was not confined to the American Gothic genre she would become primarily known for, dabbling in humor, drama, and children's literature later in life. On August 8, 1965, Jackson died during her afternoon nap following a lingering illness.
